At a Glance

  • Manual and tedious processes replaced by automation.
  • One operator does the work of four in half a day.
  • Precision synchronization between load and part.

Impetus to Invent

Each part required a weighted load placed atop it to root out defective parts. With every part requiring 100% load testing by an operator, the area was ripe for automation. Invent Automation stepped up to the challenge and created a unique system that allowed the operator to load the parts on one side of the loop while the loads were applied precisely on each part at a perfectly synchronized rate. It’s subtle, but with a combination of an advanced linear servo motor and precision screw/cam conveyor, timing between the load and the parts was absolutely synchronized, allowing the process to run continuously.

Problem Solved

The parts were very delicate, and there could be no shear load between the weight and the part, so the two had to be perfectly synchronized.

Lessons Learned

From a controls point of view, tying together a linear servo motor and a servo motor to be synchronized through a gearbox and work screw was a lot of fun.

What Was Unique

It's not too often that we have to design a custom acme screw.

What Was Challenging

When you have to apply an exact weight, stiction can be quite the challenge.
