Impetus to Invent

A customer wanted to embark on a large automation project with Invent Automation. There were two paths to choose for a core piece of equipment on the project, and before investing a lot of money, a few key experiments would show the way. The universal clamping fixture we invented would demonstrate if the product could be clamped into submission and then fastened, or if we would need to take a more elaborate approach and dynamically measure and fasten the parts together. The clamping system was very unique and could handle the customer's several configurations, indicating which path to take. Often, there are unknowns, and risks can be mitigated through experimentation like this. A little bit of investment can go a long way.

Problem Solved

Two methods were identified, and one had to be chosen. Experimentation would show the way.

Lessons Learned

Wood varies a lot with temperature, moisture content and grain.

What Was Unique

The clamping system had to adjust evenly from both sides using a unique rack and pinion centering actuator.

What Was Challenging

Developing a clamping system that could easily be adjusted for a wide variety of products.
