At a Glance

  • Simple tabletop design packs a lot of punch
  • O-ring, cap, spring, and coiled pin install all-in-one
  • Extensive poke-yoke
  • Low cost machine vision camera for part presence

Impetus to Invent

Our customer loves their work cells, and we love the work cells because they require many small machines that we can turn around quickly. In this case, the operator had to load the part, place a few assembly parts into pockets that held them just right, insert a spring, and then press the button. If the sensors detected that everything was in place, the safety door came down and the press initiated. That is how you get a basic flow control valve assembled quickly and with minimal cost.

Problem Solved

Safe, simple press to integrate with a work cell of several other machines.

Lessons Learned

You can pack a lot of punch into a small footprint with some forethought and innovation.

What Was Unique

Customer requires all sensors to be connected to a distributed I/O block for quick replacement of sensors that may break in the field. No cabinet access required. Not usual for such small machines, but a nice touch.

What Was Challenging

There is actually quite a bit going on in this little package: machine vision, a safety fence, two presses, poke-yoke sensors, and pins.
